Did you know that the latest craze in the fitness world is a type of workout known as “tabata training”? (If you have done Insanity, Focus T25, or TurboFire you are familiar with this).
Although it’s not for everybody, its benefits are attracting exercisers around the world.
Tabata training is a specific form of high intensity interval training, or HiiT. This training protocol involves performing a particular exercise (or exercises) at high intensity for 20 seconds followed by 10 seconds of rest. This is repeated 8 times for a total training time of 4 minutes.
This form of training is based on a study led by Japanese researcher Dr. Izumi Tabata at the National Institute of Fitness and Sports in Tokyo. Tabata had a group of athletes exercise with moderate intensity for an hour a day, five days a week. He asked a second group to exercise at high intensity for just four minutes, four days a week. The high intensity group alternated 20 seconds of activity with 10 seconds of rest through the four-minute workout. Both groups hit the gym for six weeks. At the end of the study, Tabata discovered that the first group showed aerobic improvement but had little to no anaerobic gains. In the second group, however, both aerobic and anaerobic performance got a boost.
Advocates of tabata training point out that, although you need to push the heart to strengthen it, more is not always better. The heart simply is not designed to go all out for extended periods, as some athletes force themselves to do–this is why marathon runners so often collapse from heart attacks. With tabata training, the challenge to the cardiovascular system is intense but brief, which is less likely to result in heart damage. It is great for burning a lot of calories in a short period of time, and you can enjoy something known as the afterburn effect, in which your body continues to use additional calories after your workout as it recovers. Like other forms of HiiT, it is thought to increase insulin sensitivity and, therefore, to lower your risk of diabetes. Those who go through it also see a spike in human growth hormone (HGH), which stimulates cell regeneration and is connected to other areas such as the immune system.

As far as intensity level: I would say that it falls somewhere in between Focus T25/The Asylum and Insanity since you can customize your workout and follow the modifier if you are a beginner and then work your way up as your strength and most importantly endurance increases. When I first heard about this program releasing, I didn’t think this was something I could do, but after doing 1 workout that I received (and all Elite coaches received in September), I realized that anyone can do this! (Will it be challenging? OF COURSE. Will the results and satisfaction that you get from completing this be worth it? HELL YEAH!) There are modifiers to follow for those who are just starting off, Scott & my personal friend and mentor Danielle Katz. Danielle says “Modifying is not a disease. It does NOT mean that you are weak.” Following the modifier is actually a GOOD thing – You get to move slowly, focus on form, build muscle and get stronger and your cardio will improve.
